Men’s basketball splits two conference games

The Virginia Peninsula men’s basketball team got off to a successful defense of its conference title, beating Carolina Christian 92-69 on Jan. 8 at Warwick High School. Javion Majette led the way for the Gators with 23 points, 12 rebounds and four assists. Keshaun Johnson had 16 points and 12 rebounds, Jaquan Majette (Javion’s twin brother) added 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals, and Quishaun Brevard chipped in with 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Three days later, the Gators (7-5, 1-1) dropped a 70-68 decision at Mid-Atlantic Christian University in Elizabeth City, N.C. Javion Majette had 17 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Johnson added 14 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks.

On Jan. 6, the Gators suffered a 75-71 loss at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, N.C. The Gators trailed 45-33 at the half, and outscored the Sea Devils 38-30 in the second half, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Women lose two road games

The women’s team dropped a pair of road games, Jan. 6 at Cape Fear and at Richard Bland, to fall to 3-6.

Softball holds interest meeting

Coach Samantha Haraway and athletics director Chris Moore held a preseason meeting Jan. 12 for those interested in trying out for the softball team, which plays its first game Feb. 17.
